Reflecting on Three Years

Director Laura Moody reflects on the incredible journey as Second Chance Cats of West Michigan reaches its third anniversary.
“It is surreal and amazing, It feels remarkable to celebrate this milestone.”
The journey has been filled with challenges, but looking back, it’s clear how far the center has come in such a short time.
From the beginning, Laura had a clear vision for the center: saving cats at risk of euthanasia in municipal shelters.
While that mission remains central, Second Chance Cats has expanded its efforts. Now, in addition to rescuing at-risk cats from shelters, the center has also become deeply involved with Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs.
These efforts focus on giving friendly cats that ended up in feral colonies a second chance at a loving home rather than releasing them back into the wild. This evolution highlights the center’s growing commitment to saving as many cats as possible and helping them find homes where they can thrive.
The Early Days: Starting the Journey
The inspiration behind Second Chance Cats came from Laura Moody’s deep love for animals and eight years of experience in cat rescue. When two local cat-only rescues shut down in 2020, Laura felt a strong need to create a safe place for cats with nowhere else to go.
“I was motivated to provide a safe place for these cats to land”
She recalls being driven to ensure these vulnerable animals were not left without care or support.
However, starting the center was challenging. Coming from a medical background, Laura struggled to navigate the complex paperwork and obtain the proper licensing. Renovating the building to suit the needs of the cats was another hurdle, and fundraising efforts needed to take off in the beginning. Despite these obstacles, Laura’s determination never wavered, and each step forward brought the center closer to reality.
Community support has played a crucial role in Second Chance Cats’ success. Laura emphasizes that the center is entirely volunteer-run and community-funded. Without the local community’s generous donations and hands-on help, the center would not be where it is today. The community’s involvement has genuinely been the organization’s backbone, ensuring cats in need have a second chance at life.
Growth and Achievements
After overcoming the challenges of the early days, Second Chance Cats began to flourish, marking significant growth and achievements along the way. One of the most memorable milestones for Laura and her team was reaching their 100th adoption, a moment that felt monumental at the time.
Today, they have successfully adopted 746 cats, giving each one a loving home. The center has become a trusted haven for cats in need, consistently caring for 50 to 70 cats at the adoption center and in foster homes at any time.

In addition to the growing number of adoptions, Second Chance Cats has been recognized for its positive impact on the community. The center was voted “Best in the West” by Revue Magazine in the small-scale attraction category, a testament to its dedication and the community’s appreciation. The annual Egg Hunt, a favorite event for families and cat lovers, has become a staple for the center, bringing people together to support their mission.
Over the past three years, Second Chance Cats has also introduced new programs and services designed to engage the community and enhance the adoption experience. Programs like “Reading with Cats” and “Game Night with Cats” provide unique ways for people to interact with the cats, helping them feel more comfortable around potential adopters.
Additionally, services like free nail trims for adopted cats and continuous post-adoption support show the center’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for the cats and their new families. The yearly rummage sale is another event that helps raise crucial funds for the center’s operations, while the Egg Hunt remains a beloved tradition.
As Second Chance Cats grows, it’s not just about the numbers or events – it’s about the lives changed for the cats and their adopters. Behind every milestone is a heartwarming story of rescue and transformation.
Heartwarming Stories
Every cat rescued by Second Chance Cats has a remarkable story; two are particularly memorable.

Larry, a kitten who came to the center well past the typical socialization stage, was initially withdrawn and unsure of humans. With patience and care, Larry slowly started to trust. Over time, he blossomed into a confident cat, and when his adopter met him, it was love at first sight. Larry now enjoys snuggling on his adopter’s lap—a remarkable transformation that shows just how impactful the center’s work can be. Today, we even have a room named after him, honoring his journey and the special place he holds in our hearts.
Another heartwarming story is that of Gabby, a shy and reserved cat who found comfort in the company of a much more outgoing cat. Their bond helped Gabby escape her shell, making her more confident and ready to join a loving family. Stories like these remind us that every cat deserves a chance to find love and happiness, regardless of background.
For Laura, these transformations are deeply rewarding. Watching a cat go from frightened and unsure to thriving in a new home is what makes all the hard work worthwhile. Not only do these adoptions change the lives of the cats, but they also bring joy and fulfillment to the adopters. The bonds formed between the cats and their new families testify to the love and care the center puts into every adoption.

Adoption Center Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles
Over the past three years, Second Chance Cats has faced its share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles has been securing consistent funding. As a 100% volunteer-run and community-funded organization, financial support has always been a concern.
Fundraising was slow initially, and maintaining a steady stream of donations remains a critical need. Without the funds necessary to cover medical care, food, and other essential supplies, the center’s ability to rescue and care for cats could be severely limited.
In addition to financial struggles, there have been operational challenges. Running a cat rescue requires navigating complex paperwork, securing proper licensing, and maintaining a facility that meets the cats’ needs. Laura’s medical background was helpful, but building a rescue from the ground up came with a steep learning curve. Renovating the building to accommodate cats comfortably and safely while ensuring it adhered to legal standards was demanding.

Despite these challenges, Laura and her team have turned these obstacles into valuable lessons. Each challenge has shaped the way the center operates today.
They’ve learned to streamline processes, focus on efficiency, and refine their fundraising and community outreach approach. These experiences have also strengthened the center’s mission, reinforcing its commitment to providing at-risk cats with a safe, loving environment.
By overcoming these obstacles, Second Chance Cats has grown more resilient and focused on its core objective: giving every cat a second chance at life.
Looking Ahead: Future Goals

Despite the challenges, Second Chance Cats has emerged more robust, with a clear vision for the future. Laura and her team are excited about the road ahead, focusing on maintaining their current success while looking to expand their impact in the community.
One key area for growth involves enhancing their community programs, like Reading with Cats and Game Night with Cats, which have already seen great success in bringing people and animals together. The center also aims to grow its foster network, enabling it to provide temporary homes for more cats and increase its ability to rescue and care for those in need.

Laura is also committed to offering new post-adoption services to support families after they bring their new cats home, ensuring long-term success for both the adopters and the cats. While Second Chance Cats’ mission continues to evolve, the organization’s heart remains focused on helping at-risk cats find loving homes. Looking forward, Laura envisions expanding the center’s capacity to rescue more cats, particularly those facing difficult circumstances, and to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of cats and their adopters.
Community Support: How You Can Help

Second Chance Cats relies on the community’s ongoing support to continue its mission. You can make a difference by donating, volunteering, or adopting a needy cat. The center needs funding for medical care, supplies, facility maintenance, and more volunteers to help care for the cats.
